The 2025 TICON Africa Conference took place from 20 to 22 August 2025 at the prestigious Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra, Ghana. This year’s gathering once again brought together ICT leaders, innovators, policymakers, academics, and professionals from across Africa for three dynamic days. 

Delegates experienced a rich programme of insightful keynote addresses, high-level panel discussions, interactive workshops, and collaborative networking sessions. Each moment was carefully designed to address Africa’s most pressing ICT opportunities and challenges.

Wednesday, 20 August

Opening Keynote

Charles Murito, Regional Director for Sub-Saharan Africa at Google, delivered the opening keynote to both the AMC & TICON Africa’s delegates, reflecting on Africa’s digital progress, the role of AI, and highlighting opportunities to accelerate connectivity, innovation, and inclusion across the continent.

Prof. Nii Narku Quaynor, renowned as the “Father of the Internet in Africa,” shared insights on the continent’s digital journey, celebrating achievements while highlighting gaps in infrastructure, policy, and inclusion.

Dr Mark-Oliver Kevor shared an inspiring keynote on the intersection of engineering, data, and sustainability, exploring how intelligent infrastructure can transform Africa’s growing cities.

Moderator Rowena Turinawe guided a compelling panel featuring Elolo Alfred Konglo, Moses Dossi, Peter Tumusiime, and Samuel Muzata, who discussed the foundations of Africa’s digital resilience and unpacked strategies for strengthening across industries.

Engineering with Intelligence:

Smart Sensors, IoT, and Edge AI for Resilient Ecosystem Monitoring

Dr Stephane Nwolley delivered a thought-provoking keynote on the power of intelligent systems, highlighting how IoT and Edge AI technologies are reshaping ecosystem monitoring, enabling real-time data insights and smarter environmental engineering across the continent. 

Leveraging Emerging Technologies to Engineer Resilient Digital Ecosystems

Khombelwayo Mlotshwa moderated an engaging panel with Freddy Ndhlovu, Alhaji Sherrif Issah, and Kamumaji Chitundu, focusing on emerging technologies and their transformative role in digital resilience.

The day concluded with the Akwaaba Night at Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, giving delegates the chance to network and experience Ghanaian culture. 

Thursday, 21 August

Tech-Driven Inclusion – Empowering Women for the Digital Economy

Rowena Turinawe opened with a keynote on remote work and opportunities for women in tech. A panel moderated by Lebo Khanda featured Bianca Pasipanodya, Viola Dondo, Nana Adjoa Adobea Asante, and Felizarda Mbewe, discussing upskilling, reskilling, and pathways for women in high-growth tech roles.

FinTech and Innovation for Competitive Enterprise Growth

Panelists John Bonuedi, Deladem Richie Bonny, Eltone Makaliki, and Priscilla Maggie Paradza, moderated by Eric Nana, explored how fintech and innovation can empower Africa’s next generation. Samuel Muzata delivered a keynote on bridging regulation and innovation to create enabling environments for enterprise growth.

FinTech and Innovation for Competitive Enterprise Growth

Scaling African Innovation

Moderator Emmanuel Makafui Gbeve led sessions on scaling African innovation, with presentations by Kelvin Lotsu on taking local ideas global, Christopher Lalusha on financing high-impact ventures, and C K Bruce on standards, trust, and regulation to support innovation. 

Inclusive FinTech Design

Alain Gbeasor moderated discussions on inclusive fintech. Presenters Mapule Ncanywa, Samuel Chiwanda, and Desmond Israel shared insights on human-centered design, financial empowerment, and policy incentives. Clarence Raymond Gama closed with a keynote on translating tech strategy into executive impact.

Bridging the Talent Gap

There were also two dynamic panels, the first moderated by Jacqui Muller, featuring Elolo Alfred Konglo, Tshepho Bathai, and Prof. Japie Greeff, who discussed strategies to close the skills mismatch and future-proof Africa’s workforce. Later, Jackie Namara Rukare led an engaging discussion with Agnes Namulindwa Lumala, Exile Njoka, Jessie Chandalala Sazambile, and Richard Osei, exploring innovative approaches to bridge the ICT talent gap and empower Africa’s next generation of digital leaders. 

Friday, 22 August

Transforming Academic Research and Professional Excellence

Prof. Amevi Acakpovi opened the day exploring how academic research can be translated into scalable tech solutions for Africa, while Dr. Clement Sinyangwe presented ICTAZ’s blueprint for professional excellence and regulation, highlighting standards and competencies for the next generation of tech professionals.

AI and Data Governance

A high-level panel moderated by Prof. Anthony Wong, IFIP President, featured Dr. Jimson Olufuye, Clement Sinyangwe, Prof. Muhammad Sirajo Aliyu, Cédric Wachholz, and Teki Akuetteh, examining AI, data governance, and the development dimensions of indigenous knowledge, cultural heritage, and biodiversity data.

Igniting Africa’s Growth

Prof. Fred McBagonluri, President of Academic City University, delivered a keynote on acquiring knowledge, building trust, and driving innovation to accelerate Africa’s growth, providing actionable insights for leaders, educators, and innovators across the continent. 

Closing Plenary and Certification

Elizabeth Chabaluka Masache, Chairperson of Women in TICON, and Mr. David Gowu, President of TICON Africa, formally closed the conference with membership certificates and reflections on advancing Africa’s digital future. Sponsor sessions included Winnie Dzidonu from MTN Ghana, demonstrating new digital tools and campaigns.

The conference concluded with the glamorous 2025 TICON Africa Awards Gala, where Africa’s brightest innovators and trailblazers were honoured. The evening celebrated exceptional achievements that are shaping the continent’s digital future and driving impact across industries.

The Gala also featured the highly anticipated announcement of next year’s host nation. Zambia was officially named as the destination for the 2026 TICON Africa Conference, reflecting the country’s rising influence in the ICT sector and its dedication to fostering digital growth.

    Prof Fred McBagonluri's Bio

    Professor Fred McBagonluri is the Provost and President of Academic City University College in Ghana, as well as Board Chairman of the Institute of ICT Professionals Ghana (IIPGH). With over two decades of global experience in engineering, innovation, research, and leadership, he is at the forefront of transforming Africa’s higher education landscape through technology and entrepreneurship.
     
    Fred has built a distinguished career across industry and academia. In the United States, he held senior positions at global companies including Siemens Healthcare, Joerns Healthcare, and Becton Dickinson, where he led cutting-edge R&D and business strategy initiatives. He was instrumental in Siemens Medical’s digital manufacturing revolution, and his contributions span fields such as computer-aided design, artificial intelligence, 3D data processing, and advanced hearing systems. He holds over 40 patents and was recognized as the Black Engineer of the Year’s Most Promising Scientist in 2008, and as a NASA Astronaut Candidate Program finalist in 2009.
     
    His academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from the University of Dayton, a Master of Science in Engineering Science and Mechanics from Virginia Tech, a Bachelor of Science (Summa Cum Laude) in Manufacturing Engineering with a minor in Applied Mathematics from Central State University, and an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a Sloan Fellow.
     
    Today, Fred’s work is centred on building a world-class, STEAM-focused university in Ghana that blends hands-on innovation with strong academic rigor. His vision is to nurture a new generation of African leaders who will help reshape the continent’s narrative through knowledge creation and transformative impact.

    Charles Murito's Bio

    Charles Murito is Google’s Regional Director, Government Affairs & Policy for Sub-Saharan Africa. He leads engagement with governments and regulators to promote digital transformation through progressive policies that drive inclusive economic growth.
     
    Prior to this role, Charles served for nearly six years as Google’s Country Director for Kenya, and in 2019, also held the position of interim Country Director for South Africa. During his time in these roles, he led efforts to achieve ambitious sales and revenue targets while championing sustainable growth strategies across emerging markets. He also took on the role of Diversity and Inclusion Lead for Google’s EMEA Emerging Markets, collaborating with global teams to build a more equitable and inclusive organisation.
     
    With over 20 years of experience in technology, media, and entertainment, Charles has held leadership roles at major global companies such as MTV Base, Warner Bros., and Turner Broadcasting.
     
    In addition to his work at Google, Charles is a Non-Executive Board Director at Absa Bank Kenya, and a Co-Chair of the B20 Digital Taskforce. He previously served on the board of CSquared, a Google portfolio company focused on improving internet infrastructure in Africa.
     
    Outside the professional arena, Charles is passionate about art, food, farming, and using technology as a force for economic development and societal progress.

    Professor Nii Narku Quaynor's Bio

    Professor Nii Narku Quaynor is a Ghanaian scientist and engineer celebrated as a pioneer of Africa’s Internet development. A graduate of Dartmouth College and the State University of New York at Stony Brook, he returned to Ghana in the early 1990s to establish some of the continent’s first Internet connections and found key organisations such as AfNOG and AfriNIC.
     
    He is Chairman of Ghana Dot Com and Network Computer Systems, and has served in global leadership roles including ICANN Director for Africa, Commissioner for the Global Commission on Internet Governance, and member of the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Group on ICT. He also helped found the University of Cape Coast’s Computer Science Department, where he continues as a professor.
     
    Prof. Nii Quaynor’s contributions have earned global recognition, including induction into the Internet Hall of Fame, the Jonathan B. Postel Service Award, and the ICANN Multi-stakeholder Ethos Award. His work continues to shape Africa’s digital future through technology, policy, and education.
